Function
When it has been determined that a student or student organization should be charged with an alleged violation of the Student Conduct Code, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities will notify the student or student organization of the charges and forward the incident to one of the following hearing bodies for review: (a) Student Conduct Board; (b) Greek Conduct Board; (c) administrative hearing panel; or (d) University hearing officer. The Student Conduct Board and Greek Conduct Board are hearing bodies consisting of students that are selected, trained, and advised by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Any Greek organization that is charged with allegedly violating the Student Conduct Code will have its case heard by the Greek Conduct Board.
Peer Governance: Leadership & Accountability in the Greek Community
An integral part of Greek life is the duty to serve others in order to make the campus and community a better place. When selected to serve on a Greek Conduct Board, students are afforded an opportunity to provide leadership for the Greek and larger community by maintaining the values and principles of the Greek community and the standards and expectations of Florida State University. Because of this, these select Greek Conduct Board members are required to have a strong vision for the potential of the Greek community to live their ideals and the leadership ability to hold their peers accountable. The Florida State University recognizes the importance and benefit of peer-governance in the Greek community. The Greek community understands that peer-governance can only be sustained through leadership and accountability exercised through the University’s Student Conduct Code.
Responsibilities
Greek Conduct Board members at Florida State University play an integral role in educating their peers about their rights and responsibilities as members of the FSU and Greek communities, upholding community behavioral standards, and implementing the Student Conduct Code. The responsibilities of Greek Conduct Board members are as follows:
- uphold the University’s community standards as defined by the Student Conduct Code and Academic Honor Policy
- honor the principles of peer governance, confidentiality, and objectivity
- participate in and improve the judicial process as needs arise
- share in the task of making challenging and difficult decisions that support the ethical and behavioral standards of the FSU community
- attend educational training sessions throughout the year as well as scheduled judicial hearings
- participate in and support the application/interview/selection process
- set aside personal and/or organizational perspective in order to establish accountability and maintain community standards
Time Commitment
Greek Conduct Board members should expect to commit a minimum of 2-3 hours per week to the Greek Conduct Board.
- The Greek Conduct Board meets when hearings are needed based on the availability of the Greek Chief Conduct Board members for each council. Greek Conduct Board hearings can be quite lengthy and often require several hours of time commitment.
Administrative Panels
All Greek Conduct Board members can be called to serve on administrative panels for the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. Administrative panels are held Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM, based on the availability of the panel. Panels can last approximately 3-5 hours. In the event a panel causes a student to miss class, the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities will make appropriate accommodations for the student. Greek Conduct Board members should be mindful of this additional opportunity when serving.
Training
Greek Conduct Board members are subject to training throughout their tenure on the Greek Conduct Board. The purpose of training is to enrich the development of skills central to upholding university standards in a conduct setting. Training will seek to address nine goals.
Greek Conduct Board members will…
- Develop listening skills in an effort to find facts
- Exercise competence in critical reasoning
- Challenge and support through questioning in a civil manner
- Gain leadership skills
- Gain a greater understanding of civic responsibility within the university community
- Expand their knowledge to properly address students in sensitive conduct cases
- Gain a greater perspective of the differences that exist between Greek Council cultures.
- Apply skills gained as a Greek Conduct Board member to a myriad of conduct settings outside the Greek Conduct Board (e.g., administrative, organizational)
- Synthesize acquired skill sets for success beyond the Greek Conduct Board experience
Training is a fluid process. Students should strive to always improve their performance when hearing cases and reaching decisions in hopes of rendering decisions that best impact a charged organization.
Following the selection of new conduct board members, an introductory training will take place in the latter half of spring semester for new conduct board members to review expectations and understand their role within the mission of Student Rights & Responsibilities and the Office of Greek Life.
Through fall training, Greek Conduct Board members should receive a basic foundation in the role of conduct in the university, how to hear and deliberate a conduct case, and the impact of this leadership role on campus.
